Encore Boston has placed 3000 workers on leave of absence. The company said they were placing workers at its 2.6 billion resort casino in Everett.
Also, the company said it was doing so while preparing to open under guidelines that are going to limit the resort’s occupancy.
Additionally, the casino is preparing to reopen its gaming floors, some restaurants as well as limited hotel capacity. Those that work at places that will remain closed are the ones that will be placed on furlough.
The company did not say the exact date when the employees would be coming back to work.
Why Encore had to Make The Furlough Decision
Encore spokeswoman Rosie Salisbury said the company was forced to make a difficult decision.
“As result of numerous reductions required for physical distancing we are forced to make very difficult decisions. This Includes the furloughing of approximately 3000 employees and managers.
“A number of these employees will return to work for training when we have a definitive reopening date. The remainder will remain on furlough until business demand dictates their return,” she said.
In March, the casino told the Mass Gaming Commission that it had 4,421 employees and 3,303 are full time while 1,118 are part-time. Additionally, this means that more than two-thirds of its employees will be on unpaid leave.
The Closure of the Company
The casino has been closed since March 15. Also, the casino will not be opening until July 6. Additionally, this was part of the phase 3 opening plan.
“Pending final approval, Encore Boston Harbor plans to reopen the casino gaming area. Encore also plans to open supporting food and beverage outlets around the casino. It also plans to open the hotel on a limited basis,” the company said.
“When it re-opens, Encore Boston Harbor will bring back its employees in a thoughtful and measured protocol. Some employees working in the re-opened amenities and restaurants will return to work. Employees, who worked in areas for which a re-opening date is uncertain due to current restrictions, are being placed on furlough until further notice,” they said.
